Volunteer Farmer’s Market Assistant - Volunteer Position
Background: The CERES Food Project is a community sustaining social enterprise producing certified organic food products while providing accredited training in Hospitality (Cert II Kitchen Operations).
The CERES Food Project is a partnership between CERES, AMES (Adult Multicultural Education Service) and IWWCV (Islamic Women’s Welfare Council of Victoria). It has brought together a group of six local Kurdish and Turkish women with a Chef/trainer. They call themselves the Seven Stars. The Project will train the migrants to work in and run their own commercial food business while making use of seasonal peaks in locally grown organic produce. As business grows, the workers will create permanent employment for themselves whilst gaining small business, food preparation and English language experience.
The Food Project manages a CERES Organic Farm Stall, which attends each of the 4 Melbourne Farmer’s Markets; Collingwood Children’s Farm, The Convent in Abbortsford, Gasworks in South Melbourne and Veg Out in St. Kilda. The stall sells produce from the Farm enterprises.

Objectives: To have a team of volunteers who can support the running and management of the Farmer’s Market Stall.
Specific Tasks & Duties:

  • Attend Farmer’s Market from 8am to 1pm on specified day.
  • Be an ambassador for Ceres and have a knowledge of Ceres projects.
  • Perform basic customer service and money handling duties.
  • Work with, help out and support work colleague(s)

Benefits: This is an opportunity to support Ceres and its Farm enterprises. You will be supporting local farming networks and reducing the distance food travels to reach the consumer.
Training: On-the-job training will be provided.
Times / Days: Saturdays 7 or 8am start (negotiable) Finish at 1pm.
Commitment Required: To do a minimum of at least one 6 hour shift per month for a minimum term of 3 months. Weekly or bi-weekly 6 hour shifts are also available.
Skills / Experience: Good inter-personal communication skills mandatory. Money handling and customer service experience preferred.

Qualities Required
:

  • Polite and clear inter-personal communication skills.
  • Reasonable physical health and mobility; suitable to light/medium lifting
  • Commitment to CERES and its values.

FARM ANIMAL CARE – Weekend Volunteer Position

Background:
This role supports the care of the animals, particularly the chickens that provide the organic free-range eggs sold at the market shop at CERES. The animals are dependent on committed volunteer support on weekends and holidays (public holidays, Christmas hols, etc.).
NOTE: This role is NOT for the ‘Chook Group’ which operates at the CERES. Our volunteering role is located at the CERES Market & Farm. If you want to contact the Chook Group which rents space at CERES, contact CERES Reception for up-to-date contact information on 9387 2609.

Objectives:
To respectfully care for and maintain the well-being of all farm animals.  To provide an enjoyable interaction between the volunteers and the farm animals (especially suitable for young families).

Specific Tasks & Duties:

  • Read communication diary
  • Follow animal feeding checklist
  • Feeding and watering of all animals
  • Collecting eggs
  • Morning shift: Let out all animals
  • Sunset shift: Lock in all animals

Benefits: Work out of doors, fresh air , interact with animals and their natural rhythms, enjoy a country experience within the city (great for young families) contribute to CERES at a nuts & bolts level.
Training: On-the-job training will be provided.

Times / Days:
Summer:
Morning shift:             Arrive approximately between 6am to 7am.
Sunset shift :              Arrive approximately between 7.30pm to 9pm.
Winter:
Morning shift:             Arrive approximately between 7.30am to 8.30am.
Sunset shift :              Arrive approximately between 5pm to 6pm.

Commitment Required: Regular weekly or fortnightly shifts.Commitment to the role for a minimum of 6 months.
Skills / Experience: No experience or skills are necessary, a love and respect for animals is paramount.

  • Qualities Required:
  • Reliability is important as the well-being of the animals will depend on it.
  • A commitment to basic communication guidelines with the co-ordinator (if you can’t make a scheduled shift)
  • An awareness of safety is important (note: children cannot be left unattended with animals on the farm).
  • Reasonable physical health and mobility.
