Introduction to Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative Victoria (AuSSI Vic)
The Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSi) is a nationally inspired program administered by DET Victoria and CERES in Victoria, aimed at dramatically reducing water use, greenhouse gas emissions and solid waste output. Through various grants, sponsorships and fees for service, over 370 Victorian schools have already participated in the program, which is available to all schools across the state.
With an emphasis on local and regional partnerships, AuSSi Victoria is a prototype of a cost effective means of rolling out sustainability education in all schools and communities of Victoria. At the same time, the program includes a wide range of opportunities to incorporate sustainability initiatives within Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS).
AuSSi Victoria provides a practical and stimulating framework for both existing sustainability programs and new initiatives. Schools have saved money and gained positive marketing and community recognition as a result of their involvement in the program. By bringing together parents, friends, local organisations and businesses, along with utility companies and government agencies, schools develop relationships that strengthen the community whilst enhancing the environment. The program delivers economic, social, environmental and educative outcomes- true Quadruple Bottom line!
AuSSi Victoria is comprised of five modules: the Core module (Schools Becoming Sustainable) and four optional modules, of which schools are able to complete all or none: Energy- energy conservation, renewable energy, air quality and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; Water- water conservation and storm water management; Waste- waste/litter minimisation and recycling; and Biodiversity & School Grounds- developing indigenous gardens that attract native butterflies and birds, developing theme and curriculum based gardens and habitats and developing watering systems.
Each module includes professional development/learning and curriculum planning sessions to help staff: construct and resource units of work; plan and implement small projects; and work towards gaining 5 Star SSi accreditation. AuSSi Victoria is even happy to work with students through their tailored incursions program.
CERES has facilitated over 250 schools, including the only forty-three 5 star fully accredited Sustainable Schools in Australia. With recognition growing for AuSSi Victoria and CERES at state, federal and international levels, it is an opportune time to consider joining this fast growing and innovative sustainability program.
