Recycle at CERES

CERES Visitors Centre in partnership with Close the Loop is a drop off point for BatteryBack, the Victorian Government’s domestic battery recycling program  managed by Sustainability Victoria.

Less than 3% of the over 400 million (14,000 tons) of batteries that are consumed in Australia each year are recycled, the rest end up in landfill.

Batteries contain hazardous materials such as cadmium, mercury and lead that are harmful not only to the environment but also human health. These materials can leak from batteries contaminating soil and ground water. Although there are dangerous substances in batteries many of these materials are valuable and should be recovered for recycling and use in other products.

CERES Visitors Centre is a drop-off point for Zoos Victoria They’re Calling on You phone recycling program.

Zoos Victoria is committed to helping Australians become smarter phone users. Mobile phones donated to They’re Calling on You raises much needed funds for primate conservation and reduces the demand for conflict minerals, such as coltan.

Zoos Victoria is working with conservation partners, Gorilla Doctors, who are protecting gorillas in the wild by securing their numbers through medical care, saving a species one patent at a time. Funds generated through the refurbishment and resale of old mobile phones through our recycling partners, PhoneCycle, support both Gorilla Doctors work in Africa and Zoos Victoria’s conservation programs.

‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ is an innovative recycling program that provides Australians with a free, easy and environmentally-accredited way to recycle their used printer cartridges.

As cartridges are made up of a complex mix of plastics, metal, inks and toners they represent a significant investment in resources.  When they are disposed of into landfill these resources are lost.

That’s why CERES has joined Planet Ark and Close the Loop to become involved in the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ program. This program collects and returns cartridges for re-manufacturing and recycling – therefore keeping them out of landfill.
