Joe’s Market Garden Volunteering

Volunteer Position Description

Looking for corporate volunteering opportunities? See here.

Joe’s Market Garden is two and a half acres of vegetable growing heaven, 2kms North of CERES on the bike path. These rich soils have been farmed for over 50,000 firstly by the Wurundjeri-Willam. Yam daisies, eels, possums, shell fish, wallaby and emu were abundant in the area. In the late 1800s Chinese migrants utilized these rich soils to produce vegetables for Melbourne’s growing migrant colonies. By 1945 the farm was bought by Joe Garita and his family. In 2003 Joe Garita progressively handed it over to CERES who has since turned it into a training ground for those wishing to get an insight into the nuts and bolts of running a market garden. Joe’s Market Garden currently sells to CERES Fair Food, CERES Market and other local organic retailers. Each Saturday we sell our produce direct to the community from 9 – 1.
