Brunswick East Gardening Volunteer

The Gardening team is responsible for the maintenance of all garden spaces at CERES Brunswick East other than the Honey Lane Market Garden and the community garden plots.

Permaculture principles are used in the design of the gardens which consist of a combination of indigenous, native and culinary plants. The habitat garden team is also responsible for the management and maintenance of several energy, water and waste systems such as composting, worm farms and irrigation.

Objectives: This volunteer position has been created to assist and support the Site Horticulturalist with the upkeep of the gardens, and as an opportunity for sharing skills and strengthening community connection.

Skills, experience & personal qualities required:

  • Enthusiasm & a keenness to learn

  • A love of plants & nature

  • Moderate fitness level

  • Polite & respectful communication skills

  • Ability to follow instructions

  • Commitment to CERES values and code of behaviour

  • Positive attitude & a good work ethic

Specific tasks & duties:

  • General garden maintenance: weeding, mulching, planting, pruning

  • Lawn maintenance

  • Maintaining several composting systems

  • Implementing & maintaining irrigation systems

  • Propagation

  • Opportunities for landscape design

  • Opportunities for data entry & research projects

Training: You will receive an induction on arrival and on-the-job training.

Times / days:

Wednesday – 9:30am – 3pm (Lunch 12 – 12:30pm)

Thursday – 9:30am – 3pm (Lunch 12 – 12:30pm)

Please note: Volunteers can opt to work single or multiple sessions.

There is no volunteer program on public holidays

Commitment Required:

  • We ask that volunteers commit to a full day (from 9:30am-3pm) for a minimum of one day per week for three months.

  • We ask that volunteers who cannot attend their nominated shift let us know by email in advance so that we can plan accordingly

  • Should you wish to discontinue your volunteer role with us we ask that you notify us by email.

You need to bring:

  • Suitable, weather appropriate clothing for working outdoors including hat or raincoat

  • Solid, enclosed-toe work boots/shoes

  • Drink bottle

  • Gardening gloves

We provide:
