Green Tech Volunteer position

Background: CERES uses a wide range of infrastructure that demonstrates technological solution for a sustainable living to school groups and the wider community. They are often developed and monitored as part of a research project with partnerships that CERES continually building with the educational and business communities. These systems include energy generation from natural sources and waste and water management. We are looking for someone to help keep the systems we have in good working order and be on the look out for ways to improve efficiency, durability and reliability. They will also be involved with the design and construction of any new green technology systems at CERES.

Team: Habitat

Team Leader: Infrastructure Manager

Objectives:

To keep our energy, water treatment/harvesting and waste management systems in good condition and suitable for display and demonstration to visiting school groups and the general public. The examples of green technology that CERES is involved in:

  • Biogas
  • Energy Consumption and Generation Monitoring
  • Grey water treatment
  • Solar Charging Station
  • Geothermal Heating and Cooling
  • Photovoltaic panels
  • Solar Thermal
  • Water Harvesting
  • Water Wheel
  • Wind Turbines

Specific Tasks & Duties:

Examples of the are likely to include (but not limited to)

  • Checking pump operation, clearing filters etc.
  • Checking pipe work for leaks and general condition
  • Recording statistic such as temperatures
  • Solar panel cleaning
  • Monitoring and recording energy use and generation
  • Assisting with Safety and Risk assessment
  • Diagnosing of simple faults and recommended action
  • Research product knowledge to assist servicing / repairs

Training:

A basic induction is given to working at CERES as well as tour of the site and facilities. Training will be on the job, as appropriate to the technology that is being worked on.
Times / Days: Wednesdays 10:30 – 3:30pm

Commitment Required:

A minimum of 3 months is preferred. Consistent attendance is needed to be a valuable team member and will make it easier for the supervisor to plan tasks in advance.

Skills / Experience:

  • Mandatory:

Technically minded with manual dexterity. Fit and healthy, independent and safety conscious. Confidence using workshop tools. Care of CERES equipment and thrifty use of materials. Ability to follow manuals or verbal instruction. Strong interest in sustainable technologies.

  • Preferred:

Electrical or plumbing trade qualification. Student or graduate of any Design, Engineering or Environmental discipline. Good telephone manner and interpersonal skills. Proficient using CAD or Mechanical design software package.  

Personal Qualities:

Lateral thinker, analytical mind, attention to detail, politeness, reliable and resourceful.
