We are incredibly grateful that no one was hurt, and thankful for the amazing response from Emergency Services. We’re also overwhelmed by the community support and positive messages we have received, including from our neighbours who notified us about the incident.
Known as the Design, Infrastructure and Gardens (DIG) Office, the building was originally the home of the Alternative Technology Association (formerly ATA, now Renew), and has been the centre of forward-thinking environmental design, development and community connectedness since it was built in 1984.
In recent years it has served as the main community volunteer hub for the park, as well as a home for the team who manage the park infrastructure and gardens on a daily basis. It also housed many historical documents, photographs and plans, and is a significant loss to the community.
The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and is being investigated by Victoria Police. Some areas of the park surrounding the building will not be accessible while the investigation is being undertaken. The Bike Shed which is located next to the building will be closed this weekend.
